DICKSON AND JONATHAN ARE LIKE FATHER AND SON: IJAW NATION REMAINS A UNITED FRONT

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Abuja Branch have watched with great concern the unfolding drama between the incumbent governor of Bayelsa state and former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Of concert to us is the fact that this so called disagreement has been escalated by a slew of lieutenants on both sides whose only claim to fame is their capitalizing on the opportunity to criticise leaders and further alienate them from each other.

Ijaw nation is one and Dr. Jonathan, even though he has become an elder statesman for his role in stabilizing Nigeria’s democracy, remains its undisputable leader and Governor Dickson is a product of his political structure.

The challenges confronting the Ijaw nation, though are legion and not in any way the making of the people, stem from the failure of the Nigerian state to give it a fair share of its contributions to national income over the decades.

These so-called aides, godsons and loyalists on both sides of the divide would do well to articulate the collective sufferings of our people and join us in pressing home our demands of empowerment for our teeming unemployed youths among other more pressing issues rather than dividing our leaders to the advantage of our collective enemies.

We need a united front, not attempts by opportunists to divide our leaders and present the Ijaw nation to Nigeria as a weak and incoherent bunch of rabble rousers. Dr. Jonathan is a man of peace and a perfect gentleman and it is time for people to stop using his name to further their shaky political careers under the guise of fighting against Governor Dickson.

Governor Dickson’s loyalists should also focus on the more serious issues of governance rather than seeking the favour of their master by working against Ijaw interests.

Both leaders need to come out to publicly put to rest these stories making the rounds that they are not in good terms, that some third grade politicians are using as a ladder to come to the fore of public consciousness.

EBIZIMOR PREYE
IYC ,ABUJA, CHAIRMAN
